Arbitrary file read via unchecked image path
Published Jul 7, 2025 · Updated Jul 7, 2025
Path traversal in LlamaIndex llama-index-core 0.12.27 through 0.12.40 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary server files. The encode_image function in generic_utils.py passes image_path to a file open operation and Base64-encodes the bytes without validating that the path identifies an image. Exploitation requires a consuming application to pass attacker-controlled input into encode_image, and disclosure is limited to files readable by that process.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
