Arbitrary file overwrite via predictable temporary path
Published Sep 29, 2025 · Updated Sep 29, 2025
Insecure temporary-file handling in magicmonty bash-git-prompt 2.6.1 through 2.7.1 allows local users to overwrite files. The createPrivateIndex function copies the Git index to /tmp/git-index-private$$ without exclusive creation, so a preplaced symbolic link redirects cp. A local user who can inspect the victim shell PID and create the link before prompt execution can replace a victim-writable target with Git index contents.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
