CVE-2025-59825

Arbitrary file write via chained symlink traversal

Published Sep 23, 2025 · Updated Sep 23, 2025

Path traversal in Astral astral-tokio-tar 0.5.3 and earlier allows attackers to write files outside the extraction directory. Entry::unpack_in_raw fails to keep archive paths within the destination, while allow_external_symlinks validates two symlinks separately instead of their combined resolution. Exploitation requires a consuming application to extract a malicious archive; escaped writes can overwrite files that the user or system later executes.
