Traffic disclosure via certificate-chain hostname matching
Published Mar 3, 2026 · Updated Mar 3, 2026
Certificate hostname validation in Apache Ranger 2.7.0 and earlier allows man-in-the-middle attackers to read NiFi client traffic. NiFiRegistryClient and NiFiClient compare the requested hostname against certificates across the presented chain instead of restricting the check to the leaf server certificate. A network-positioned attacker can satisfy the check with a matching name on a non-leaf certificate and observe otherwise protected client data.
