Container root escalation via group-writable passwd file
Published Apr 8, 2026 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Incorrect default permissions in Red Hat OpenShift Update Service images allow local users to gain root privileges within a container. The image build creates /etc/passwd as root-group writable, allowing a process in group 0 to append an account with UID 0. Exploitation requires command execution inside the affected container and root-group membership; success grants full root control within that container.
