CVE-2025-57850

Container root escalation via group-writable passwd file

Published Dec 2, 2025 · Updated Mar 12, 2026

Privilege escalation in Red Hat OpenShift Dev Spaces allows local users to gain container root via modification of /etc/passwd. Affected workspace images create /etc/passwd with group-write permissions, letting members of the root group append an account with UID 0. Command execution as a non-root user inside the affected container and membership in the root group are required; the resulting authority is confined to that container.
