Database takeover via unrestricted moderator SQL
Published Sep 11, 2025 · Updated Sep 11, 2025
Improper access control in Subrion CMS 4.2.1 allows remote authenticated users with SQL Tool access to take over its database. The SQL Tool passes Moderator-supplied DDL and privileged statements to MySQL without role-based statement restrictions, allowing CREATE USER, GRANT, DROP USER, and DROP TABLE operations. Moderator or Administrator access to the admin-panel feature is required; successful use can create privileged database accounts, alter or delete users, and delete tables.
