Local code execution via replaceable plugin DLL
Published Sep 26, 2025 · Updated Sep 26, 2025
DLL hijacking in Notepad++ 8.8.3 allows local users to execute code by replacing a plugin DLL in a writable installation. At launch, Notepad++ loads plugins\NppExport\NppExport.dll, so a same-named malicious replacement can run while forwarding the original exports. The claim is disputed because the default Program Files installation is not writable by unprivileged users; exposure requires a nondefault writable directory.
