Service degradation via unindexed IP lookup queries
Published Jul 4, 2025 · Updated Jul 8, 2025
Uncontrolled resource consumption in Wikimedia Foundation MediaWiki IPInfo allows remote attackers to delay database queries via IP lookups. The ipinfo/v0/norevision path invokes AnonymousUserIPLookup::checkIPIsKnown, whose cu_private_event join and abuse_filter_log lookup scan millions of rows when an IP has no edits. Endpoint access controls limit reachability, while repeated qualifying requests consume database time and degrade availability.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=1.39.x <1.39.13
- Affected versionversion=1.42.x <1.42.7
- Affected versionversion=1.43.x <1.43.2
