Local administrator credential disclosure via unsalted MD5 storage
Published Jul 21, 2025 · Updated Jul 22, 2025
Weak password storage in hMailServer 5.6.9-beta and 5.8.6 allows local users to recover the initial administrator password. The installer’s GetHashedPassword function applies unsalted MD5 to g_szAdminPassword and writes the digest to the Security section of hMailServer.ini. The vulnerable state is limited to the password created during setup; a local user who can read the configuration file can crack the digest offline and recover administrator-console credentials.
