Root command execution via writable init script
Published Aug 1, 2025 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Privilege escalation in AK-Nord USB-Server-LXL Firmware 0.0.16 Build 2023-03-13 and earlier allows local users to execute commands as root. The low-privilege admin account owns /etc/init.d/lighttpd, allowing arbitrary commands to be inserted into a script that root executes on invocation and at boot. SSH access and the admin password are required; successful modification provides persistent root-level command execution when the script next runs.
