AMF crash via stale UE context assertion
Published Sep 8, 2025 · Updated Sep 8, 2025
Reachable assertion in Open5GS 2.7.5 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash the AMF through repeated UE reconnects. During an SBI timeout, amf_state_operational continues after the RAN-UE context has been removed, deassociated, or mismatched, causing ngap_build_downlink_nas_transport to assert on a missing AMF-UE object. Access to the NGAP-facing core-network path and the ability to drive rapid UE connection churn are required; exploitation terminates the AMF and takes the gNB offline.
