CVE-2025-52054Network attack vector

Root access via predictable MAC-derived password

Published Aug 28, 2025 · Updated Aug 28, 2025

Improper authentication in Tenda AC8 v4.0 firmware 16.03.33.05 and earlier allows remote attackers to obtain root access over network services. The FUN_00400c5c function builds the root password from a firmware-embedded static string and the device MAC address's final two octets, then doSystemCmd assigns it to the root account. An attacker who obtains the MAC address from network traffic and extracts the version-specific string from firmware can reconstruct the credential and authenticate through exposed Telnet or SSH services.
