Root privilege escalation via password newline injection
Published Aug 22, 2025 · Updated Jul 5, 2026
Improper input validation in OpenMediaVault 7.4.17 allows local users to change the root password through a crafted password. The changePassword method writes the unvalidated password into a temporary username:password record that the root-run chpasswd command parses one line at a time. An authenticated non-privileged account with permission to change its password can inject a second line for root, reset that password, and gain full system control.
