Service crash via unchecked structure field count
Published Dec 30, 2025 · Updated Dec 30, 2025
Heap memory corruption in Mat_VarCreateStruct in matio 1.5.28 allows attackers to crash a consuming process via mismatched field counts. The function trusts nfields as the length of the fields pointer array, reads beyond a shorter array, and later frees corrupted field-name pointers during cleanup. Triggering the flaw requires a caller to pass an inconsistent array/count pair; remote reachability exists only when an embedding service constructs structures from untrusted input.
