Stored XSS via unfiltered excerpt HTML
Published May 31, 2025 · Updated Apr 8, 2026
Stored XSS in Relevanssi 4.24.5 and earlier and Relevanssi Premium 2.27.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to inject scripts into excerpts. The excerpt generator returns comment-derived or contributor-controlled HTML without stripping non-whitelisted tags before WordPress renders the stored excerpt. The unauthenticated path requires comments as excerpt sources with search-term highlighting disabled; otherwise a malicious contributor can supply the content, and script execution requires a user to view the affected page.
