NTLM credential disclosure via remote shortcut target
Published Aug 12, 2025 · Updated Feb 13, 2026
Information disclosure in Windows File Explorer allows remote attackers to expose NTLM credentials through a crafted shortcut. Explorer resolves a shortcut whose target is a remote executable, fetches the binary for embedded icon data, and initiates NTLM authentication to the SMB host. The shortcut must be delivered and displayed in Explorer; the response supports offline cracking or relay, but the downloaded binary is not automatically executed.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
