CVE-2025-49809

Local privilege escalation via MTR_PACKET override

Published Jul 4, 2025 · Updated Jul 8, 2025

Local privilege escalation in BitWizard MTR 0.95 and earlier allows local users to execute attacker-chosen programs as root. The execute_packet_child function in ui/cmdpipe.c reads MTR_PACKET from the caller's environment and executes the supplied path as mtr-packet. Exploitation requires a sudo rule that permits the user to run mtr with elevated privileges; the usual Linux capability or setuid mtr-packet setup does not expose this path.
