SYSTEM privilege escalation via MSI repair console
Published Sep 9, 2025 · Updated Feb 26, 2026
Improper access control in Microsoft Azure Connected Machine agent before 1.49 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through MSI repair. The Windows MSI repair custom action creates the azcmagent scheduled task as SYSTEM and exposes a conhost.exe console that retains elevated rights. A low-privileged user with GUI access can hold schtasks.exe.mui with an opportunistic lock, keep the console open, and launch an arbitrary executable as SYSTEM.
