CVE-2025-49012Network attack vector

Privilege escalation via duplicate group display names

Published Jun 5, 2025 · Updated Jun 9, 2025

Privilege escalation in Himmelblau 0.9.0 through 0.9.14 and 1.0.0-alpha allows remote authenticated users to gain login or sudo access. The PAM group filter builds its allowed-user set from both each Entra group's mutable displayName and immutable objectId, so a duplicate-name group passes the comparison. Exploitation requires pam_allow_groups to contain a display name and tenant settings that let the account create a same-named group; successful bypass admits the account or grants sudo rights.
