Denial of service via RTT accumulator overflow
Published Jul 22, 2025 · Updated Aug 26, 2025
Integer overflow in iputils ping before 20250602 allows remote attackers to corrupt statistics or disrupt adaptive mode via ICMP replies. gather_statistics() treats a zero payload timestamp as an enormous round-trip time, then squares it and overflows the statistics accumulator. Exploitation requires a matching crafted Echo Reply while ping is running; the result is incorrect monitoring data or an application error in adaptive mode.
