Local privilege escalation via improper link resolution
Published Jul 8, 2025 · Updated Feb 13, 2026
Improper link resolution in Microsoft Windows Update Service allows local users with low privileges to elevate privileges via crafted links. The service resolves a link before file access without ensuring that the resolved target remains an intended resource. A local authenticated foothold is required; exploitation can create, modify, or delete files under a privileged security context.
