Local media deletion via misattributed intent caller
Published Mar 2, 2026 · Updated Mar 2, 2026
Local privilege escalation in Google Android 14 through 16 allows local users to delete media without MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission. MediaProvider's bulk-request flow launches PermissionActivity without preserving the original caller UID, so the redirected activity validates the wrong calling package. A local app can exploit the intent redirect without additional execution privileges or user interaction, with impact bounded to unauthorized media deletion.
