Local privilege escalation via VHDX buffer over-read
Published Jul 8, 2025 · Updated Feb 13, 2026
Buffer over-read in Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk on affected Windows releases allows local users to elevate privileges through a crafted VHDX file. Microsoft has not disclosed the parsing locus or the missing bounds validation that causes data to be read beyond the intended VHDX buffer. Exploitation requires user interaction with the crafted image; successful processing grants elevated local privileges and can compromise the host.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
