Diagnostic disruption via overflowing RTT timestamp multiplication
Published May 5, 2025 · Updated Jan 26, 2026
Integer overflow in iputils ping before 20250602 allows remote attackers to corrupt RTT statistics via crafted ICMP Echo Replies. The gather_statistics function multiplies an attacker-controlled signed timestamp seconds value by 1,000,000 without first bounding it to the long integer range. No authentication is required, but the target must be running ping and accept the forged reply; observed effects include zero RTT readings and incorrect statistics.
