Application crash via backtracking equation validation
Published Jun 30, 2025 · Updated Jun 30, 2025
Regular expression denial of service in string-math 1.2.2 and earlier allows remote attackers to crash applications via crafted equations. The top-level validation loop repeatedly searches an untrusted equation with its line 7 regular expression, and long tab-prefixed input followed by repeated unmatched parentheses drives excessive backtracking. Reachability depends on a consuming application passing attacker-controlled strings to stringMath; exploitation exhausts CPU and eventually crashes that application.
