CVE-2025-44904Public exploit

Application crash via invalid chunk size

Published May 30, 2025 · Updated May 30, 2025

Heap buffer overflow in HDF5 1.14.6 allows context-dependent attackers to crash applications by supplying a crafted HDF5 file. H5D__chunk_lock trusts an unfiltered chunk size returned by the chunk index even when it differs from the size inferred from chunk dimensions and datatype, leaving H5VM_memcpyvv to copy beyond the allocated heap buffer. Exploitation requires an application to open attacker-controlled HDF5 content; the demonstrated result is an out-of-bounds read and process crash.
