Firmware downgrade via disabled TLS verification

Published Nov 24, 2025 · Updated Nov 24, 2025

Firmware downgrade in the OTA Update functionality of GL.iNet Slate AX 4.7.0 allows man-in-the-middle attackers to install older firmware. The fetch_firmware_info function sets ssl_verify to false when retrieving the update list and metadata, so intercepted responses can advertise an older signed image under a fabricated higher version. Exploitation requires interception of update traffic and user approval; the downgrade can reintroduce vulnerabilities present in an older signed image.
