Memory corruption via ImageIO bounds error

Published Aug 21, 2025 · Updated Apr 2, 2026

Out-of-bounds write in Apple ImageIO in affected iOS, iPadOS, and macOS releases allows attackers to corrupt memory via a malicious image file. A public proof of concept alters DNG SubIFD SamplesPerPixel data and an SOF3 component count to reach a suspected JPEG lossless decoder bounds mismatch; Apple has not disclosed the exact faulty operation. Processing the crafted image is the gate, and exploitation has been reported in targeted attacks; the documented standalone consequence is memory corruption.
