Engineer-to-root execution via unsigned APP installation
Published May 27, 2026 · Updated May 27, 2026
Improper APP signature verification in Phoenix Contact PLCnext firmware before 2026.0.3 allows remote authenticated users to execute code as root. The Web-based Management APP Manager accepts a repackaged squashfs APP without validating its digital signature, then runs the APP-defined executable with root privileges. Engineer credentials and network access to the management interface are required; successful exploitation grants full control of the controller.
