CVE-2025-40761

Physical root-shell access via unrestricted BIST mode

Published Aug 12, 2025 · Updated Aug 12, 2025

Authentication bypass in Siemens RUGGEDCOM ROX II devices, all versions, allows physically proximate attackers to obtain a root shell. Built-In-Self-Test mode fails to restrict access through the serial interface, exposing an authentication-free path to the device shell. Physical access to the serial interface is required, after which root privileges permit complete device control.
