System hang via mismatched mmap lock release
Published Dec 9, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026
Denial of service in affected Linux kernel releases allows local users to hang the system while draining an AMD KFD retry fault. In drivers/gpu/drm/amd/amdkfd/kfd_svm.c, svm_range_restore_pages releases a read lock after its caller acquired the mmap write lock, leaving the write lock held on return. Reachability requires local access to the AMD KFD shared-virtual-memory retry-fault path; later mmap readers or writers deadlock, hanging the system.
