CVE-2025-40316

Kernel crash via DRM device reference imbalance

Published Dec 8, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026

Use-after-free in the MediaTek DRM driver in affected Linux kernel versions allows local users to crash the system during device unbind. The bind-failure and unbind cleanup paths call put_device on component devices after reference ownership moved into mtk_drm_get_all_drm_priv, unbalancing their reference counts. Triggering requires local access to a system using the MediaTek DRM component and a component bind failure or driver unbind; the bounded impact is a kernel crash.
