CVE-2025-40118

Kernel memory access via expander remote PHY index

Published Nov 12, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Out-of-bounds access in affected Linux pm80xx kernels allows local users to access kernel memory during module removal with a SAS expander. The pm8001 device-removal path uses an expander's remote attached_phy value to index the HBA-local pm8001_ha->phy array, whose size covers only local PHYs. Reachability requires the pm80xx driver, a device behind a larger SAS expander, and module removal; the published reproducer establishes a UBSAN bounds violation but not a specific post-access outcome.
