CVE-2025-40044

Kernel crash via unchecked UDF descriptor length

Published Oct 28, 2025 · Updated Oct 28, 2025

Out-of-bounds read in the Linux UDF driver allows attackers to crash the kernel through a crafted filesystem image. The allocation-extent parser trusts the on-disk lengthAllocDescs value, so udf_update_tag() passes crc_itu_t() a length beyond the block buffer. Exploitation requires the image to be mounted and accessed; the resulting out-of-bounds scan can fault into unmapped memory and panic the kernel.
