CVE-2025-39988

Kernel memory corruption via misparsed CAN XL frame

Published Oct 15, 2025 · Updated Oct 15, 2025

Out-of-bounds write in the Linux kernel etas_es58x CAN USB driver from 5.13 allows local users to corrupt kernel memory via a crafted CAN XL frame. Missing ndo_change_mtu validation permits an invalid interface MTU, after which es58x_start_xmit misreads CAN XL flags as a CAN frame length and copies up to 255 bytes into an 8-byte or 64-byte field. Reachability requires a usable ETAS ES58x CAN USB interface plus CAP_NET_RAW and, for an MTU change, CAP_NET_ADMIN; the overflow can disclose or corrupt kernel memory and crash the host.
