CVE-2025-39870

Kernel crash via invalid configuration device release

Published Sep 23, 2025 · Updated Sep 23, 2025

Double free in affected Linux kernel versions allows local users to crash the system during Intel IDXD work-queue setup. In idxd_setup_wqs(), error unwinding calls put_device() on an uninitialized conf_dev when max_wqs is nonpositive, or reuses the prior iteration's pointer after kzalloc_node() fails. Triggering the path requires CAP_SYS_ADMIN or root access to rescan a PCI device and, for the allocation branch, a memory-allocation failure that cannot be induced reliably.
