CVE-2025-39840

Kernel-memory disclosure or crash via audit path underflow

Published Sep 19, 2025 · Updated Sep 19, 2025

Out-of-bounds read in affected Linux kernel releases allows local users to disclose kernel memory or crash the system via an audit watch. The audit_compare_dname_path() loop reduces a one-character root path to zero length, then reads p[pathlen - 1] without confirming that pathlen remains positive. Reachability requires a directory watch on / and an fsnotify event for a single-character name directly beneath /; consequences are limited to kernel-memory disclosure or a system crash.
