System reboot via unhandled synchronous error loop
Published Sep 11, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026
Denial of service in Linux kernel ACPI APEI allows local users to reboot affected systems via abnormal synchronous memory errors. In drivers/acpi/apei/ghes.c, abnormal error paths queue no memory_failure() work, so the faulting task repeats the synchronous external abort. The condition requires local code to trigger an uncorrected memory error on a platform reporting synchronous exceptions; repetition can cross firmware thresholds or hard-lock the kernel.
