CVE-2025-39754

Local kernel crash via unlocked smaps PTE

Published Sep 11, 2025 · Updated Sep 11, 2025

A race condition in affected Linux kernel versions allows local users to crash the kernel by reading hugetlb smaps during page migration. smaps_hugetlb_range() reads a huge-page PTE without holding its page-table lock, so migration can replace and unlock the entry before pfn_swap_entry_folio() reaches BUG_ON. Exploitation requires local access and a hugetlb mapping to race page migration; the documented consequence is a kernel crash, with no confidentiality or integrity impact.
