CVE-2025-38725

System crash via unmasked AX88772 PHY enumeration

Published Sep 4, 2025 · Updated Sep 8, 2026

NULL pointer dereference in Linux's AX88772 USB Ethernet driver allows local users to crash the system during suspend or resume. Without an AX88772 MDIO phy_mask, the driver registers up to 32 PHY devices, but only the primary PHY binds a driver; phy_state_machine then dereferences phydev->drv for an unbound PHY. Reachability requires a compatible AX88772 adapter, such as the D-Link DUB-E100 hardware revision B1, and control of a suspend or resume transition.
