Kernel crash via invalid RCU kthread pointer
Published Sep 4, 2025 · Updated Sep 8, 2026
Improper validation in Linux kernel RCU nocb CPU re-offloading allows local users to crash the kernel through an invalid kthread pointer. After rcuop thread creation fails, de-offloading leaves related pointers valid but nocb_cb_kthread unset, so re-offloading passes the wrong guard and unparks an invalid pointer. Reachability requires CAP_SYS_MODULE to load rcutorture, the only in-tree caller of rcu_nocb_cpu_offload; exploitation interrupts the system.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
