CVE-2025-38683

Kernel panic via unsynchronized VF namespace move

Published Sep 4, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026

Missing synchronization in Linux hv_netvsc, including SIMATIC CN 4100 before V5.0, allows local users to trigger a kernel panic. During namespace cleanup, re-registering the netvsc NIC also moves its VF into the default namespace while default_device_exit_net() iterates the device list, causing the loop to miss its end and dereference NULL. Exploitation requires high-privilege namespace control on a Hyper-V guest with an hv_netvsc NIC and associated VF; the resulting panic interrupts the system.
