CVE-2025-38660Network attack vector

Kernel memory corruption via unterminated CephFS name

Published Aug 22, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Memory corruption in affected Linux kernel CephFS clients allows remote attackers to read or write kernel memory via crafted MDS replies. parse_longname() passes a Ceph reply name that may lack a NUL terminator to strrchr(), which reads beyond the message buffer and inflates the decoded-name length. A malicious or compromised MDS, or an on-path attacker on unencrypted CephFS traffic, can trigger kernel memory disclosure, heap corruption, or a panic when CONFIG_FS_ENCRYPTION is enabled.
