Kernel crash via unchecked active-display return
Published Jul 25, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel 5.8 and later affected branches allows local users to crash the kernel during AMD HDCP setup. The mod_hdcp_hdcp1_enable_encryption function passes an unchecked null result from get_first_active_display into the HDCP encryption path, where it is dereferenced. A low-privileged local user and an AMD display state with an empty active-display list are required; the reported consequence is limited to availability.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
