System hang via ATAPI DMA controller bug
Published Jul 10, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026
Denial of service in the Linux kernel pata_via driver allows local users to hang systems through ATAPI DMA on affected VIA controllers. The via_mode_filter path allowed DMA for ATAPI devices on VT6415/VT6330-class hardware because its PIO restriction covered only DMI-listed systems, not the controller ID. Triggering requires an affected controller and ATAPI optical device; reading disc metadata can hard-hang the host, while attached hard drives are unaffected.
