Local service crash via failed framebuffer mode allocation
Published Jul 4, 2025 · Updated Jul 14, 2026
Null-pointer dereference in Linux fbdev allows local users to crash the kernel through a framebuffer mode-change ioctl. If fb_add_videomode() cannot allocate a mode, do_register_framebuffer() still registers fb_info without the expected modelist entry, which fb_videomode_to_var() later dereferences. Exploitation requires local low-privileged ioctl access to an fbdev device and interrupts the affected host or an embedded GNU/Linux subsystem.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
