CVE-2025-38165

Kernel panic via shared sockmap buffer linearization

Published Jul 3, 2025 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Denial of service in affected Linux kernel releases allows local users to crash the kernel through a 100 KB sockmap strparser payload. A backlog-level skb_get leaves the socket buffer shared when sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue calls skb_linearize, tripping BUG_ON(skb_shared(skb)). The path requires low-privileged local access and enough aggregated data to exceed MAX_MSG_FRAGS; the bounded consequence is a kernel panic and service interruption.
