Kernel crash via unchecked missing checksum tree
Published Jun 18, 2025 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel btrfs affected branches from 5.9 allows local users to crash the kernel during scrub. With rescue=idatacsums mounted, scrub omits the NO_DATA_CSUMS check and passes a missing checksum-tree root to btrfs_search_slot. Reaching the fault requires local access to initiate scrub against that specially mounted filesystem, and the resulting kernel crash interrupts the host.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
