System crash via unchecked error-pointer dereference
Published May 20, 2025 · Updated May 23, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel allows a kernel-internal allocation failure to crash affected s390 systems during PCI discovery. In __clp_add(), an unchecked error pointer returned by zpci_create_device() is treated as a struct zpci_dev pointer and dereferenced while adding it to scan_list. Reachability requires an s390 PCI hotplug event and an internal allocation failure, prerequisites that Ubuntu reports attackers cannot invoke or influence.
